DANVERS, MA– Middleton Family Medicine has officially opened the doors to its new, purpose-built home in Danvers, MA, thanks to a transformative adaptive reuse project led by Ebbrell Architecture + Design.

The 20,000 square-foot facility—once a standard office and lab building—has been reimagined into a patient-centered medical environment that balances clinical efficiency with comfort and care.

Designed and delivered in a two-phase approach, the project prioritized continuity of care while accelerating delivery timelines. Phase 1 introduced a 4,500 square-foot specialty suite on the second floor, housing dermatology, behavioral health, gastroenterology, and MOHS treatment services. Phase 2 expanded operations into the ground floor, bringing together Middleton Family Medicine’s primary care services in a bright, modern space designed for long-term adaptability.

“From day one, the Ebbrell team brought a high level of creativity, responsiveness, and speed to this project,” said Steven J. Loeper, President of Structured Solutions and the Owner’s Project Manager for Middleton Family Medicine. “They embraced multiple changes and kept to a tight timeline while ensuring patient care and staff needs were always met. The result is a space that’s a home run!”

The design focuses on a pod-based team care model that promotes collaboration among staff while reducing wait times for patients. Clear separation between patient and staff pathways, along with designated check-in and checkout areas, ensures privacy and smooth operations throughout the facility.

“I loved the puzzle aspect of this project which required reworking existing conditions to meet the specific needs of a high-functioning medical practice,” said Jessica Cargile, NCIDQ, LEED AP, Interior Designer at Ebbrell. “Every square foot was planned with intention – from daylight-filled staff areas to carefully separated patient and staff flows.”

One standout feature is the innovative wayfinding system designed to improve navigation and reinforce the practice’s brand identity. Each of the 31 patient suites features a unique flooring pattern at the door to create a “welcome mat” effect, alongside 16-inch tall, color-coded room numbers built into the door frames.

“These wayfinding features set the design apart,” said Loeper. “And it helps ensure patient privacy and staff efficiency.”

To further enhance the healing environment, Ebbrell incorporated calming ocean- and beach-themed artwork throughout the space, contributing to a serene, place-based atmosphere.

“Reimagining and repurposing existing buildings is both a design responsibility and an opportunity,” said Miika Ebbrell, AIA LEED AP, Principal at Ebbrell Architecture + Design. “This project showcases how thoughtful adaptive reuse can create modern, high-performance healthcare environments without starting from scratch. We’re proud to have helped turn a dated office building into a vibrant, functional medical facility for the community.”

The result is a forward-looking medical home that supports Middleton Family Medicine’s mission to provide exceptional, accessible care—now and into the future.
